Title: A very basic primer to many topics

Review: I’m not really sure how to qualify this book. It’s definitely more of a guidebook that skims over lots of topics versus an in-depth book that helps families with distance learning. Honestly, it’s kind of all over the place. I’m hoping to find a book that focuses on the process and techniques of successful distance learning. This isn’t it.

Review: Distance learning with my daughter brought on a whole new set of anxieties for both of us. This book has helped me better understand the situation she's in and provides such useful action items to help support her not only academically, but socially and emotionally as well. This book could not have come at a better time! It's helping us through this pandemic, but I can also see long-term benefits for my daughter and for me.

Review: I work at a non-public school, grades 6-12, in the library and distance learning has been our sudden reality since March 2020. This book addresses so many issues and concerns we are looking at. This is seriously worth owning for $20. The four sections (chapters) are: The basics; The Value of...'; Principles of Well-Being; The Mindframes.
I appreciate the sections on reading as a tool and broad-based reading being important. There are lists of places to get free books on-line. And the importance of sleeping. We have known this forever and it is a fight to make it a priority, especially for teens. It is the single best thing to do for a kid. I was not prepared to appreciate this book the way I do. (I figured it might be a take-advantage of the strange "new normal" book. But, no, this is a keeper.)

Title: A playbook for learning, not just distance learning

Review: Yes, a book needed to be written to make sense out of the disruption of Zoom school and help kids learn while schools are closed. Some of the hilarious viral videos online from parents make the point that they are not meant to be substitute teachers, but have been thrust into this role. This book is designed to help parents while schools in many areas navigate reopening during the pandemic. It talks about hybrid learning, and makes the point, "It turns out, what we do matters rather than the medium."
Another gem in this helpful book: if your kids have mobile phones, turn them off when classes are in session.
As well, it gives some valuable pointers that can be applied to in-person learning as well, such as three key questions:
1. What am I learning today?
2. Why am I learning it?
3. How will I know that I learned it?
The book, written by four experts including QUEEN BEES AND WANNABEES author Rosalind Wiseman, is divided into several simple parts.
1. The Basics, including common sense (routines and Zoom etiquette for kids and parents)
2. The Value of...various disciplines, including math and the various contributions of other cultures
3. Principles of Well-Being...including social development
4. Mindframes for Students and Families (including how to embrace making mistakes).
One suggestion that seems especially valuable for kids that want in-person learning is to have "learning pods," small groups of kids taught by either a parent or a hired teacher. There is a lot of anxiety surrounding the coronavirus and having kids back in school, so the authors provide the suggestion of "pod learning" as an alternative.
An invaluable book that provides a guide for online learning even after in-person instruction resumes.

Title: Mostly focuses on supporing children's emotional needs and good work habits online

Review: Distance learning is currently an in-demand, but difficult, topic. This book doesn't have much about specific subects parents may suddenly be having to "teach" their children at home. Of course, that would be difficult to cover--all the subjects at multiple grade levels, but the authors ignore the issue/problem completely. One of the biggest challenges of distance learning for parents is how much more often they may have to take on the role of teacher, and be able to do it the way the child's teacher wants it presented, learned and studied. This book won't help you with that.
The book seems primarily for elementary-middle school children's parents (there would be value in having a section for children themselves to read some of the advice here, but it isn't set up like this. Although t's well organized in some ways--topics, headings, etc.--it could use more sub-headings, bolded, so one could more easily skim for specific points.
They mention how commonplace group work online is, but don't have much about troubleshooting it. The authors mention the importance of supporting the teacher(s)--and that's certainly true--but it's important for teachers to understand what parents' challenges are in having children at home with them (often, during the pandemic, more than one). Noise control, a dedicated work space, a regular routine (including enough sleep) are all good points mentioned here, but.the fact is, some of that may not be possible. They write a bit about Zoom--choosing background, understanding muting, login, etc. but there's not a lot about technology. They advise parents getting to know the "Learning Management System" (LMS) the school uses--and lists them--but doesn't show examples or compare the advantages/disadvantages of each. This iis something I wished was stronger with this book, in addition to curriculum advice for parents-as-teachers' helpers. It is good about emphasizing the importance of socialization and emotional health and some ways to help. (Not much about how to eencourage socialization with classmates outside of class, virtually now..
Overall, this book may help parents understand more about the challenges of online learning for their children and how they can be more observant and more helpful. It won't help much with technology questions (doesn't mention connectivity problems) or how parents can be more successful in their new role (wanted or not) as the second-line teacher. Other than the importance of being supportive of the teacher, they don't say much about how to succeed in this new role. And, as I say, the small print could be larger given all the available space, and more subheadings would also help. This book has advice that may give some parents more confidence and comfort in doing this. It doesn't really go into depth on the specific challenges, difficulties and even disadvantages of distance learning for children, as opposed to adults.
